The East German team was not as successful as the West German. They played 1 time at the World Cup and that was in neighboring West Germany in 1974. There was a big shock after the draw, when West Germany was linked to East Germany of all places. It would be the first (and last) time that the two blood relatives would play an international match. East Germany won 2-0 against Australia and drew 1-1 against Chile. As a result, East Germany was already certain of placement before the squatter against West Germany. However, there was more at stake than just a victory, it was a struggle between capitalism and communism. West Germany was sluggish, East Germany limited itself to defending. And 13 minutes before the end, Jürgen Sparwasser scored the winning goal for the communist utopia, much to the delight of the Honecker government. In the second round, however, the GDR ended up in a group with the Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina. The DDR finished in third place in this group. Brazil and the Netherlands lost 1-0 and 2-0. Only against the Argentines was a 1-1 draw.
