The East German team was not as successful as the West German. They were at the World Cup once and that was in neighbouring West Germany in 1974. There was a big shock after the draw, when West Germany was paired with East Germany. It would be the first (and last) time that the two blood relatives would play an international match against each other. East Germany won 2-0 against Australia and drew 1-1 against Chile. As a result, East Germany was already certain of a place before the cracker against West Germany. However, there was more at stake than just a victory, it was a battle between capitalism and communism. West Germany was struggling, East Germany limited itself to defending. And 13 minutes before the end, Jürgen Sparwasser scored the winning goal for the communist utopia, to the great joy of the Honecker government. In the second round, however, the GDR ended up in a group with the Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina. The GDR finished in third place in this group. Brazil and the Netherlands were defeated 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. Only against the Argentinians was there a 1-1 draw.
