Socrates was a Brazilian professional footballer. He was nicknamed O Doutor (The Doctor) because he was a doctor as well as a professional footballer. Sócrates was named South American Footballer of the Year in 1983. Sócrates made his debut for Brazil on 17 May 1979 against Paraguay and played a total of 63 international matches in which he scored 25 times. Together with Zico, Falcão and Toninho Cerezo, Sócrates formed the Magic Quartet in the Brazilian midfield. Sócrates was captain of Brazil at the 1982 World Cup in Spain and 1986 in Mexico. After the 1986 World Cup, Sócrates retired as an international.
