After only 2 minutes Johan Neeskens fired a penalty kick hard past goalkeeper Sepp Maier. West Germany, led by captain Franz Beckenbauer, knew how to deal with a deficit and after 25 minutes the score was level again. Just before half-time Gerd Muller scored the winning goal. For West Germany it was the second world title.
