The final was played in Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. In a tough match, Argentina took a 0-1 lead with a goal from Mario Kempes. Late in the second half, substitute Dick Nanninga equalized for the Dutch national team. Just before the end, Rensenbrink hit the post. In extra time, both teams were tired, but the Argentinians proved to have the most stamina. It was Kempes who scored again, in the 105th minute. In the second half of extra time, Daniel Bertoni secured the Argentinian victory, after a pass from Kempes.
